There are thousands of face materials available to choose from, ranging from papers to foils to decorative and durable film materials. An L&N Applications Specialist will work with you to select the material that meets your specific needs. We will take into consideration how the label will be used, the environmental exposures that are likely, any secondary printing operations that might take place, and other factors that are important to you.

I have a difficult surface to apply a label to. What types of adhesives do you recommend?

As with face materials, there are adhesives designed for every situation. Adhesives range from temporary to permanent. Your Applications Specialist will help determine the right adhesive for your application.

Labels can be finished in many ways, with the three most popular being rolls, cut sheets, or fan-folded stacks. Your Applications Specialist will discuss your specific needs with you so that we deliver labels in the format most useful to you. Factors to consider include whether they will be used in a printer or whether they will be hand or machine applied. We can meet any special packaging requirements you may have.

Can you manufacture labels that meet Underwriters Laboratories requirements?

Yes! L&N has earned the right to manufacture labels that meet the standard of UL 969 for Labeling & Marking Systems. Our UL Recognized Component Labels can be made from a variety of durable materials with an assortment of adhesives to meet your exact UL labeling requirements.

Do you have products that will stand up to a harsh environment?

We can design your product for almost any environment. In addition to being able to print on many durable films coated with high-performance adhesives, we can also over laminate them to protect the graphics. Labels can be over laminated with polyester or polycarbonate films in a variety of thicknesses depending upon the needs of the application. Ask your Applications Specialist for details about shipping, water bottle, and surfaces that might require standing up to outdoor conditions.

Who produces the artwork necessary to print the labels?

You can submit your own artwork to us. We also offer label design services. We can produce the artwork and send a proof to you, or we can receive artwork from you. We accept artwork produced with most graphics software programs, on either Macintosh or Windows Platforms. Art can be sent electronically or on a disk. We can even work with most negatives and reflective artwork. Our pre-press specialists will work closely with you to make labels that look exactly as you need them to look, regardless of the artwork we are starting with. Whether you are trying to find the design perfect for a coffee, tea, or food label, we can help.

What if you don’t have a standard material that meets my needs?

If we cannot find a face stock/adhesive combination that meets your needs, we will work with our suppliers to have a material custom made just for you. We can also have materials made with patterned adhesives (sticky in some areas, no adhesive in others), piggyback constructions, or with other custom features. Just ask!

How do I get a barcode if I need to have barcode labels printed?

Barcodes are issued and controlled by the Uniform Product Code Council. You can contact them and they will issue your company a set of numbers which can be used for your product barcode. We can then use this number to produce barcode artwork for your label.

What is the difference between direct thermal transfer and thermal transfer?

Thermal printing uses a thermal print head that applies heat to the surface being marked. Thermal transfer printing uses a heated ribbon to produce durable, long-lasting images on a wide variety of materials. No ribbon is used in direct thermal printing, which creates the image directly on the printed material. Direct thermal media is more sensitive to light, heat, and abrasion, which reduces the life of the printed material.
